The MN Movie Man

Awards Season Starts….NOW

Entertainment Weekly  #1189, January 13, 2012

Hello all!

Even though the seasons haven’t changed much weather-wise, you can for sure tell that the awards season is upon us.  For the next eight weeks you won’t be able to throw a big gold remote and not hit an award show on television.  Starting with the Golden Globes this Sunday, the awards telecasts are going to come fast and furious.  And y’know, I really enjoy them all.  Yes they are long and pretty glitzy but that’s where a lot of the fun comes in.

While I love the Golden Globes and the Oscars I have to say that my favorite presentations to watch are the Screen Actors Guild Awards and The Independent Spirit Awards.  If you’ve never seen them, seek them out and make sure they are recorded for your viewing pleasure.

The SAG awards are notable because they are given only to performances and are general pretty light-hearted.  The tribute clips they show for people that have passed are also excellent at highlighting all members of SAG.

The Independent Spirit Awards was something I hadn’t caught before…but watching it last year I found it to be a very tongue-in-cheek, riotous affair.  It’s not quite the anti-Oscars but they do a good job at keeping everyone on the same level.

If you’re a movie lover like me you know that we are coming up on our “Christmas”…and just like Santa has his list…Entertainment Weekly has their own list of the ’25 Movies You Need to See Before Oscar Night’.  True, the nominations aren’t out yet but they have a pretty good idea that these films below should be seen before the big night.

I’ve seen 20 of them…and will be knocking out another 3 in the upcoming week…

How many have YOU seen?

Here is the list in reverse order with more information on where you can see these movies and what score I’ve given them.  If I’ve reviewed the movie on my blog I’ve linked to it for your easy clicking pleasure 😉
