Synopsis: A tribute to choreographer Pina Bausch.
Release Date: Out now in selected cities, coming soon to the Twin Cities (was screened at the Walker recently)
Thoughts: Nominated for a 2012 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, Pina is director Wim Wenders tribute to the late choreographer Pina Bausch. I confess to know nothing about Bausch nor do I have a strong knowledge of her work. What this trailer accomplishes so masterfully is to draw the discerning viewer in with striking visuals, avoiding the talking heads and narration most documentary trailers feature. Wenders (like Werner Herzog) is a gifted filmmaker that has had success with feature films but has of late turned to documentary features. Don’t be put off by the use of 3D in this — I’ve heard it’s quite impressive and with Wenders at the helm it must have been utilized in service to the narrative subject. I cross my fingers this will pop up soon on our local shores.
