2026 BAFTA FILM AWARDS
Longlists Announced: January 9, 2026
Nominations Announced: January 27, 2026
Awards Ceremony: February 22, 2026
Paul Thomas Anderson's sprawling comedy One Battle After Another has shattered BAFTA longlist records with an astonishing 16 mentions across every major category, surpassing the previous record of 15 set by Emilia Pérez last year and matched by All Quiet on the Western Front, Oppenheimer, Barbie, and Killers of the Flower Moon in recent cycles. The film swept through performance categories with newcomer Chase Infiniti landing on the Leading Actress list, Leonardo DiCaprio on Leading Actor, and Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, and Teyana Taylor claiming Supporting slots. Chloé Zhao's Hamnet and Ryan Coogler's Sinners trail close behind with 14 mentions apiece, both securing Best Film, Director, and multiple performance nods that confirm their status as genuine contenders rather than also-rans.
Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme follows with 13 mentions, Bugonia and Frankenstein each clock 12, and Sentimental Value and Wicked: For Good round out the leaders with 8 mentions each. British indies punched above their weight, with Harry Lighton's Pillion and Kirk Jones's I Swear each landing six categories (the latter making Best Film), while Ballad of a Small Player surprised with five. Andrea Riseborough continues her improbable awards run, securing a Leading Actress spot for the little-discussed thriller Dragonfly, echoing memories of her controversial To Leslie Oscar nomination that sparked industry-wide conversation about grassroots campaigning.
The snubs tell their own story. Julia Roberts's Golden Globe-nominated turn in After the Hunt failed to crack the ten-strong Leading Actress longlist, while The Testament of Ann Lee was shut out entirely despite Amanda Seyfried's Globe nod and the film's strong Venice reception. The Smashing Machine managed only a single Makeup and Hair mention after high hopes for both Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson, a disappointing return for such an expensive production. Wicked: For Good scored an impressive eight longlist entries but notably missed Best Film, following the same puzzling pattern from the Globes. The ceremony moves to the Royal Festival Hall this year as part of a multi-year Southbank Centre deal, with Alan Cumming hosting after his turn at the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards. Voting to determine final nominations opens today and closes January 20, with the official noms announced January 27.
