Review:

Elmore Leonard built his reputation on morally complex characters spitting out hard scrabble dialogue and its why readers devoured his crime novels. Those qualities on the page wound up translating  translated beautifully to the screen in adaptations like the scorching Out of Sight,  the Hollywood-skewing Get Shorty, and Quentin Tarantino’s bona fide masterpiece, Jackie Brown (though let’s not talk about 2005’s Be Cool, or 1989’s Cat Chaser m’kay?),  But before those modern crime stories, there was a short Western tale about a good man escorting a dangerous outlaw to a train. The 1957 adaptation became a classic and still delivers today. Five decades after that film was released, James Mangold proved a remake could stand proudly alongside its predecessor without taking anything away.

Christian Bale (Batman Begins) plays Dan Evans, a struggling rancher and Civil War veteran. To provide for him family, he takes a job that all but guarantees he won’t return: transport captured outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe, Nuremberg) to the 3:10 train bound for Yuma prison. Wade’s gang, led by the psychotically loyal Charlie Prince (Ben Foster, The Finest Hours), will stop at nothing to free their boss. What follows is part escape thriller, part unlikely-partners drama as Evans and Wade develop a grudging respect during their perilous journey.

The interplay between Bale and Crowe elevates the entire film. Specifically, Crowe plays Wade as a captivating captive — dangerous but never gratuitously cruel. That restraint makes him someone audiences can almost root for…almost. Bale, in contrast, brings wounded determination to Evans, a man driven as much by damaged pride as financial desperation. And Foster? He’s mesmerizing as Prince, all crazy eyes and coiled violence. The supporting cast includes Peter Fonda as a grizzled bounty hunter, Gretchen Mol (Millers in Marriage) as Evans’ wife who suffers no fools, and Logan Lerman (Oh, Hi!) as Evans’ adventure-hungry son. Mangold, who would later direct Logan, keeps everything moving with the efficiency of a classic  Western from the likes of Richard Thorpe or John Sturges. Yet he still finds room for genuine emotional weight.

Via Vision’s limited edition is a beauty. The 3D lenticular hardcase features a gunslinger silhouetted against an oncoming train — sturdy, striking, and appropriately dark. Inside, a standard black 4K case holds the disc alongside six art cards with stills from the film. It’s a package that adds texture without overdoing it. The 4K presentation, sourced from a 2K Digital Intermediate, delivers impressive results. Rich browns, warm hues, and deep blacks bring the sun-scorched Arizona Territory to life through Phedon Papamichael‘s striking cinematography. Similarly, the DTS:X audio track impresses — galloping horses thunder through the surrounds while Marco Beltrami‘s Oscar-nominated score provides emotional backbone.

Extras are plentiful on both discs. Mangold’s commentary anchors the package, supported by an archival conversation with Leonard (who passed away in 2013) and featurettes covering the production, period firearms, and the historical West. As a result, this stands as the currently definitive home video presentation of a seriously underappreciated modern Western.  Import this one from our friends in Australia today — Via Vision takes great care in making Limted Collector’s Editions with the cinephile in mind.
