Synopsis: A reporter returns to his Florida hometown to investigate a case involving a death row inmate.
Release Date: October 5, 2012
Thoughts: The Paperboy marks director Lee Daniels first film since his Oscar nomination for Precious in 2009 and at first glance the two films couldn’t be more different. Shot with a gauzy tarnish to capture the humid Florida setting, Daniels has assembled a top-drawer cast for his adaptation of Pete Dexter’s gritty novel. Kidman gets a lot of flak for her Botox addiction but let’s not forget that she’s a damn fine actress who easily switches between vixen and victim. Looks like she’ll get to play a little of both here as she slithers her way through the lives of co-stars Matthew McConaughey (after Bernie, Magic Mike, and Killer Joe how many movies can he do in one year?), Zac Efron (The Lucky One), and John Cusack (The Raven). I like these seedy sort of films and both the trailer and poster capture just the right attitude the material deserves.
