Thoughts: Even with the presence of Julianne Moore I’m still at a loss for why Carrie needed to get the remake treatment. By all accounts, the original was a dynamite take on Stephen King’s novel about a troubled telekinetic youth so I’m just not sure whyafter one inferior sequel and a TV remake we needed this. The original boasted two Oscar nominated performances (Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie) and is still a landmark achievement in horror. While Boys Don’t Cry director Kimberly Peirce seems to be an interesting choice, she has only one other film credit to her name. Moretz might be a solid choice but so far I haven’t seen her career produce a performance that rises above petulance and a mumbling/grumbling discontent at life (Dark Shadows, for example). Carrie is a tricky role that Spacek was outright perfection in. Even more troubling is screenwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has only written for television (and that show was Glee!)…I’m all for taking a look at this because I don’t think Moore took this for the money…but I’m such a fan of the original that I’ll be watching this remake closely.
